Mint Julep Smash

A refreshing blend of mint, bourbon, and a splash of sweetness to cool down your Derby Day celebration.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Bourbon (Woodford Reserve recommended)
  • 10-12 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (see recipe below)
  • 1 oz water
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig, for garnish
  • Ice for serving

Simple Syrup Recipe

Simple syrup is a quick and easy way to add sweetness to your cocktails. Here’s how to make it:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

Instructions:

  1. Combine equal parts water and sugar in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely into the water.
  3. Cool the syrup to room temperature before using.
  4. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Instructions for the Mint Julep Smash

  1. Muddle the Mint: In a glass, add the mint leaves and simple syrup. Use a muddler or spoon to gently crush the mint leaves to release their oils. This gives the drink that fresh minty flavor.
  2. Add Bourbon and Ice: Pour in the bourbon and water, then fill the glass with crushed ice.
  3. Stir and Garnish: Stir the mixture well to combine the ingredients. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig.
  4. Serve: Serve immediately with a straw or stirring stick for easy sipping. Enjoy the refreshing flavor!

Chef Paddy’s Tips

  • Use **crushed ice** instead of cubed ice to get the proper texture and keep the drink colder longer.
  • Adjust the **simple syrup** to taste if you like it sweeter or more balanced.
  • For extra freshness, add a small splash of club soda or sparkling water for a fizzy touch.
